At Heroes B&B, we spend an exorbitant amount of time creating and then bringing our fantasy Dungeons & Dragons adventures to life. (And yes, we will take the Fifth when asked exactly how much time that takes! 😊 )
For fellow homebrewing Game Masters, it’s bringing adventures to life that can be so challenging, particularly if you want to go beyond the ordinary. More specifically, we’re talking about the terrain and miniatures that immerse our players into our fantasy worlds.
Finding those – again beyond the common, pre-painted miniature or terrain set at the local retail store – can definitely be challengin and for many, just too time-consuming. Which is why we wanted to provide you with our current “Go-To” list for creating adventures. That is, these are the sites we visit first to find that unique miniature or terrain piece that will truly make that session memorable.
By the way, are there other sites you can visit beyond those that are mentioned below? Absolutely! But the below have been tested and are definitely recommended by your overcaffeinated GMs here at Heroes! Hope this helps!Printed Miniatures _ Our go-to here is Plague Miniatures (https://plagueminiatures.com/). We love it because this Minnesota-based, family owned company are huge supporters of our Heroes B&B charity events. But we use their minis so often in our adventures because their monsters are so often used in D&D settings (dragons, undead, etc.) and they look significantly different from the prepainted versions we see in retail outlets. What’s more is their shipping is terrific and their minis are absolutely solid, not the flimsy printed products you sometimes see.
Battle Mats Finding “ground terrain” can be expensive and frankly challenging to keep at your house because the stuff can be so unwieldly. Battle Mat Bazaar (https://battlematbazaar.com/) took the pains out of this with an ingenious move by creating cloth battle mats. Not using it? Just fold it up and store it. It’s super handy and what’s better, it comes with both grids and nongrid versions. We’ve used their ocean mats and were impressed at the colors and the ease of use!Printed Terrain We’re super excited about this as we’ve found a great site. And this comes after trying a host of Etsy sites, ordering more than a couple of terrain sets and each time being unhappy about how small the terrain was! Hopefully, now, that’s in the rearview. We’ve just started working with Tabletop Terrain (https://tabletopterrain.com/) and have been super impressed. We ordered a rock terrain set and loved the detail of it, not to mention how big it was! We still need to paint it to see how it holds up but we’re expecting great things. By the way, the selection this site has for terrain is quite extensive!
